Newbluephosphorescentiridium(III)complexescontaining2-phenylpyridinederivativesasthemainligands and4-substitutedpicolinatesastheancillaryligandsweresynthesizedandtheirphotophysicalpropertieswere investigated.Inaddition,thestructuresofthreeoftheiridium(III)complexesweredeterminedbyX-ray crystallography.Thephotophysicaldatashowthattheintroductionofelectron-donatinglong-alkoxyor dialkylaminochain(?OCH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 CH3, ?OC 5 H 11, ?OC 6 H 13, ?OC 7 H 13, ?N(C3 H 7)2,or ?N(C4 H 9)2)onthe4-positionofpicolinateimprovedthephosphorescencequantume?ciencies(Φ p =0.57?0.77)ofsynthesized iridium(III)complexeswiththemaximumemissionrangeof461?464nmat298Kinethanolsolution. Interestingly,thesubstitutionofthemethylgroupatthe4-positionofthepyridineringofthe2-phenylpyridine mainligandsinthecomplexeswithamorestronglyelectron-donatingmethoxyordimethylaminogroupresults inasigni?cantbathochromicshift(69nm)ratherthanahypsochromicshiftofthephosphorescenceemission maxima.Density ?eldtheory(DFT)calculationswereperformedtogaindeeperunderstandingoftheseemission behaviors.ThethermallymoststableIr7amongthesynthesizedbluephosphorescentiridium(III)complexeswas testedasanemittingmaterialinasimpleOLEDdevice.
